Why are people so offended or against evolving from apes?

Religions love to spread this idea that human beings are special. That's the reason why so many religious people dislike the theory of evolution. They say that evolution reduces us to "just animals" but we're really more than that -- we're God's unique creation. What about evolution then makes us special? We really wouldn't be, & in their arrogance, I don't think a lot of religious people would want to admit that.
