Pack and play mattress?

I intend on using an Eddie Bauer pack and play instead of a formal crib. I would like to put a mattress in it to make it a little more comfortable. As I'm looking for them online, I'm noticing there are mattresses and mattress pads...what's the difference between the two? Which is better?
